My Summer Reading List
I picked up Start With Why by Simon Sinek at a very pivotal point in my business. I knew what I did and how I am different in my industry but I didn’t know how to articulate my why. Why, is the thing that inspires us and inspires those around us. Yes, there’s something so special about freezing a moment in time and being apart of the first day of a marriage, but I knew there was more in my heart.
To help me figure this out, I posted “WHY” on a big piece of paper in bubble letters and posted it on my refrigerator. This piece of paper remained on my refrigerator for a few weeks. I thought about my why a lot. After a lot of reflection, I started to formulate my why, just about the time when I began to read this book!
Start With Why is a really inspirational book. It truly talks about why your why is important and how that leads to not just success, but trust. Some key points that really stuck with me are the following:
- “The role of a leader is not to come up with all the great ideas but to create an environment in which great ideas can happen.”
- “Energy is easy to see, easy to measure, and easy to copy. Charisma is hard to define, near impossible to measure, and too exclusive to copy. All great leaders have charisma because all great leaders have clarity of WHY.”
- “Communication is not about speaking, it’s about listening.”
- “There is always competition, what if you just strived to be better than the previous day.”
So, what is my why? My why is to bring happiness to people. In our world today, I believe there isn’t enough happiness, love, and God. I love what I do because I get to make people happy, by photographing important moments in their lives. Taking beautiful pictures is just a bonus! I know that today, I am better than I was six months from ago, and in six months from now, I will be better than I am today. For me, that is all I need!
