My Secret Garden

My Secret Garden

A Green Thumb & Mojito Lover

A fun fact about me is I used to work in a greenhouse in college! Not just any greenhouse but the Greenhouses and Growth Chambers at Cornell University. I worked with everything from bananas to your grocery store watermelon! I love working with plants. They are just so happy! It’s so rewarding that a little love and some water can make something grow. Don’t you agree?!

My love for plants goes back to my childhood. Every year my dad would plant a HUGE vegetable garden. We would help him make the raised beds and plant the seeds. Every winter we’d pick out the seeds we wanted for the following spring and then we’d grow them under plant lights until they were big enough to plant outside! It was so much fun going down into the basement to check on the little seedlings and watch them grow. One of my favorite memories is of green beans! We’d grow them along our fence and then, once they were ready, we’d have green beans for days! We’d pick them and package them up to give to our neighbors. I can still remember the taste of fresh green beans right off the vines! Yum!

So, every year I plant a vegetable garden! My own little secret garden. It’s something that gives me SO much joy. There’s something so satisfying about growing your own food! From making fresh salads to a homemade tomato sauce, it’s just so much fun! I love getting my vegetables and flowers from Oakland Nursery. They have a wide variety of plants and the quality of the plants is amazing. This year we did a smaller garden because our lease will be up in the summer. However, I still wanted to have a little outdoor retreat. We planted tomatoes, shallots, garlic, potatoes, cucumbers, and lettuce. For herbs, we planted rosemary, sweet basil, parsley, cilantro, and of course, my favorite mint.

Musa and I grow mint for summer mojitos! We LOVE mojitos and having fresh mint throughout the summer is a must for us!

Our Favorite Mojito Recipe

1 Lime

Agave Nectar

White Rum

Ice

Fresh Mint

Squeeze an entire lime into a drink mixing cup. Next, muddle the mint. Add agave nectar to sweeten (about 2-3 tbsp). Pour in your favorite white rum and shake the cocktail over ice. Enjoy!
