One Woman’s Tribute To Kate Spade

One Woman’s Tribute To Kate Spade

Requiescat In Pace, Dear Kate

My heart contracted when I heard the newscaster report that Kate Spade, the American fashion designer, died. A quiet sadness washed over me. It was the same melancholy feeling I experienced with the passings of other famous legends who shaped my life, for example, Prince, David Bowie,  Princess Diana, Stephen Hawking, to name a few. I realize they are just ordinary fragile people who possess an extraordinary gift. In some way, shape or form, I was fascinated by them because of who they were as a person or their brilliant talent. I would follow them. I’d watched from afar. I would be starstruck. I would be in awe. I would witness from a distance the celebrity, never really to “know” them as a person, however, their talent became the vital tool in bridging the gap between familiarity and unacquainted.

For me, their persona developed into a comfortable companionship, and I would begin to “feel” like I knew them. With the help of the media, I would observe their lives, their successes, their embarrassing failures, their sins, their seeking repentance, their love and yes, their tragic death. I loved these folks we call legends who made it seem effortless to establish a strong life connection through their talent, their mission, their service or their human philanthropy. Kate Spade was one of those legends for me. She made a substantial impact in the glitzy world of design and fashion which certainly trickled down to little old me.

When I wore a Kate Spade design, it made me feel like a hip fashionista, sophisticated, fun, fresh and pretty. Kate soon became my vogue companion. She was like a girlfriend who provided the perfect  “pop of style” for each outfit and important occasion.  That perfect yellow purse as I raced out the door for the appointment. Those funky polka-dot black and white eyeglasses that provided me with many flattering compliments from others of being modish, snazzy and cool. The bright fluorescent lime sunglasses that went perfectly with any wide brim beach hat. The beautiful cream Kate Spade Libary Lane China that everyone oohed and ahhed at Becca’s wedding shower. Kate’s influence was there when I walked Becca down the aisle at her wedding wearing the most adorable pink and navy floral leather pumps and carrying a snappy bubblegum pink purse. I felt like a million bucks wearing Kate Spade. And now, she is gone.

Her life force has dimmed, and yes, her legacy will continue. But it is never really the same. It never is once someone great passes. So today, I want to take this moment to honor my dear vogue companion, Kate. I imagine it’s time for the angels to rock a “stylish pop” from Kate Spade. Thank you, Kate, for styling me like no other. Rest in peace, dear Kate. I and the world will miss you.
