My Backup System

How I Backup My Business

Photographers, this one is for you! I am married to a Network Engineer who thinks our “intra-web world” is always out to get us. But, he’s right. It’s SO important to have a backup system in place for your business and images! I can’t wait to share with you my backup system and why it works for me.

First and foremost my first line of backup is my double-slotted camera body. My Nikon D750 has TWO SD card slots and I think this is so important! When I shoot, I have the cards back up to each other. This way, if something were to happen to one card, I have an identical copy of all the images I’ve taken. This is so crucial, especially when shooting one of the biggest day in someone’s life, their wedding day!

My second backup is at my house and it’s my Synology DS216+II. Inside are two Western Digital 3TB 7200RPM disks that are running in RAID1 (aka mirroring each other). It emails me the working status of the array – if there are any errors, unexpected shutdowns…even if the temperature is too high! When I get home from a wedding, I upload my RAW images and Lightroom galleries right into Synology. I just feel extra safe that way! It is SO nice to know that this system my back!

My third backup is to the “cloud” in case something happens to my Synology backup – it breaks, someone steals it, or God forbid my house burns down (oh no!). For that peace of mind, I use Backblaze C2. Backblaze syncs up to my Synology and copies it to their cloud anytime it senses any changes.

My last backup is my client galleries. I use PASS Plus and it is amazing. It stores all of the client galleries that I give directly to my client. So I can access them and my clients as well. They are stored on the PASS server so it’s another way to ensure a good back up.

I couldn’t have done this amazing backup system without the help of my husband. He truly is awesome when it comes to our “intra-web world.” I am happy to answer ANY questions you have about backing up your business and images. You can send me a message or email me at [email protected].
