5 Tips For Getting Ready Photos

Having Dreamy Photos From Start To Finish

Getting ready photos is one of the most exciting parts of your wedding day. Your hair and makeup are done, all of your bridesmaids are around you, and you slip into your dream wedding gown. It’s real, it’s here, today is your wedding day and you are a BRIDE!! All of the moments, from the first time your dad sees you to when you put on your grandma’s bracelet, I love catching every second of your day. Sometimes venues don’t have the most “photographer friendly” getting ready areas. If you are getting ready in a church, sometimes they put you in the basement or the cry room. Even elegant hotels will have you get ready in a conference room. But don’t worry! You can still have dreamy and airy getting ready photos! I’m going to tell you 5 tips to have dreamy photos from start to finish.

Do your “wedding homework.”

A few weeks before your wedding day, I send my brides something I call “wedding day homework.” This is a little check list of all your wedding day details, from your wedding rings to your invitation suite. I’ve found that having all of your details together makes getting ready photos go so much more seamless and fast. On the wedding day, when there are 100 things going on, instead of having to find all of your details, you know exactly where they are, in one place.

Prepare your bridesmaids.

You know those pretty photos of the bridesmaids surrounded by the bride while she is getting ready? Fluffing her wedding dress and just SO excited for her wedding day?!  I love these images! These photos aren’t part of a styled shoot, these are real-life wedding days! They happen because the bridesmaids were ready before the bride. Especially if you have a large bridal party, having the girls ready before you slip into your dress makes your photos so much more polished and luxurious.

Reduce clutter.

If you’re like me, I have a LOT of things to get ready with. From makeup to clothing, things can scatter everywhere! In order to have pretty getting ready photos without everyone’s items and bags in the way, it’s a good idea to have one space to put everyone’s belongings. This is also a good time to remove any funny rugs, decorations, and picture frames to have a clean non-distracting background in your getting ready room. Don’t worry, we will put everything back the way we found it!

Plan for the getting ready photos.

Getting ready photos typically take 2 hours from start to finish. This includes all of your details, you getting into your dress, special moments with your bridesmaids and family members, and any first looks. In order for this experience to be as relaxing and seamless as possible, plan for this when budgeting your wedding day timeline.

Find the light.

Every once and awhile, brides will get ready in a room that either has no natural light or that just isn’t “photographer friendly.” This is OKAY! We have a backup plan! Once your bridesmaids are all ready and the bride has her dress on we will move to a different spot to lace up the dress, put on jewelry, etc… During this time we kind of “stage” the getting ready photos. So no matter where you are getting ready, you will have beautiful, light and airy photos!
