Tools For A Fruitful Marriage

I will never forget the first time our marriage mentors described love to us. We were sitting in their cozy house on a weekday night after a long day of work. The room smelled like vanilla from the candle that was burning on the counter. Bob and Lou have been married for 60+ years and are going strong! Musa and I sat across the living room from them on a cozy couch. Bob turned to us and said that their love has developed into something so much deeper than we can even imagine. When we were their age, that was puppy love, passionate and exciting. What they have now is a true Godly love for one another. They had been through life, loss, successes, and obstacles together. They not only had a deep love for one another but respect. And that is the secret to a fruitful marriage, to love and respect one another.

Musa and I read three books to equip us with Godly tools for marriage. These books were SO helpful to not only tackle what life throws at us but to work as a united team. The first book we read was Love and Respect by Emerson Eggerichs. Musa and I would spend our weekends at a coffee shop reading this book aloud to one another. Soaking up every word. It talks about how a wife needs to feel unconditional love while a husband needs to be respected. This love and respect cycle is SO important. Without love, she reacts without respect, and without respect, he reacts without love, and a painful, negative cycle begins. We still reference this book today!

When we were first married, Musa and I joined a couples bible study. The book we read was The 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman. Have you ever had a hard time communicating with someone or pleasing someone but you’re trying everything in your power to do so? This book has the answer. Every person is different and has different love languages to offer. This book really helps you get to know how your spouse gives and receives love. Here is a little quiz to show you what your love languages are! It really helped Musa and I understand what the other person needs to feel heard. I love this book so much, I gift it to all of my couples! It truly has some good tips.

One of our obstacles when we first got married was the finances. We both had been saving and spending differently as individual people. It can be so easy to fall into a routine of what you value to budget and purchase. Musa and I took a while to develop our financial plan, it’s still something that isn’t perfect and we frequently have to revisit. The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey is a fantastic book to read. It walks you through a step by step plan to having financial peace as well as to save. It is one of our “go-to” books every month! A must-read for sure!

I’m always up for a good read! I’d love to hear some of your favorite books as well!
