10 Tips To Make Moving A Breeze

Making The Hardest Part Of Moving A Little Easier

Musa and I are currently in the process of moving out of our little townhouse! It has been our sweet newlywed home over the past two years. Now we are ready for something a little bigger and of course, to have a yard of our own for Rex and Fly.

This is such an exciting time for us, however, for me, the worst part about a new home, is the moving part! From packing to moving, cleaning to unpacking, moving is simply a lot of work. Also, you don’t realize how much stuff you have until you move! I’ve been keeping a list of some helpful tips as we go through this process. I thought it would be fun to share them with you!

Pack in stages

One useful part about moving is most of the time you have a move-out/move in date! Take advantage of this and plan ahead! I started 4 weeks before our move out date because of being so busy with wedding season. By doing this, I can pack a little bit each day (or until I run out of boxes). It makes the process not as stressful!

Donate what you don’t use

I didn’t realize how much stuff Musa and I have collected over the years until I started packing. Anything I haven’t used in the last year, I am donating. This goes for kitchenware, decorations, clothing, and just about everything else. It’s kind of exciting to free your life of clutter.

Use secondhand boxes

Packing can be an expense. Between the moving truck and supplies, it all adds up. One thing Musa and I have been doing are getting second-hand boxes. There are so many boxes at your local grocery store (I love the egg and apple boxes). Also, check Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. There are so many people that have just moved and have tons of boxes for free! Because we live in an apartment complex, I also stalk people that are moving in and make sure to snag all of their boxes when they’re done!

Keep the boxes light

There’s no reason to make boxes heavy. Remember, you have to move about a hundred of these things twice! Clothing also gets heavy really fast. Make sure as you’re packing that the boxes stay nice and carry-able.

Assemble boxes properly

This sounds so simple, but it is important to make sure the boxes are folded properly. If you do the self-folded way (by folding each flap over to form those tiny squares), heavy items can fall right through the box. Make sure two flaps meet and then the other too, tape well!

Pack snug or add paper fill

Items move during moving. It’s so important to make sure everything is packed snug with lots of paper to buffer any movement.

label label label

Label all of the contents in each box. If you need to find something later on, being specific will be SO helpful! It seems like a lot of work, but it’s really worth it in the end.

Label fragile items

Also, label the items that are fragile. This way, whoever is helping you move, knows to be careful with those particular boxes. It’s also helpful when you are loading the items in the truck not pack it on the bottom.

Color coat rooms

Okay, this may seem a little crazy, but color coating has been a lifesaver. I went to Staple’s and got those little-colored dots. Not only is this super helpful to know where things go but it makes packing the truck SO much easier. For us, green dots get packed first and those items will go in the garage, yellow means really fragile (must travel in the car), and orange will go into the home.

Make sure a quick bed is available

The biggest piece of advice my mom gave me, is make sure an air mattress and bedding is in your passenger seat. It should be the first thing you set up when you move. Because when you are tired of moving and packing, you will want to crash in your bed!!
